در زمان پادشاهی او اعیان قدرت را در اختیار داشتند و اردشیر در واقع دست نشاندهٔ همین نجبا بود و چون بررغم تمایلات تعصب آمیز و ضد مسیحی موبدان کوشید تا مگر با امپراتور روم روابط دوستانه برقرار کند ناخرسندی نجبا را برانگیخت و به تحریک آنها کشته شد.جانشینانShapur IIیعنی برادرش اردشیر دوم و دو پسرش شاپور سوم و بهرام چهارم شاهزادگان ضعیف النفسی بودند و در زمان آنها اعیان دولت به آسانی اقتداری را که در عهد شاپور از دست داده بودند، به چنگ آوردند. پادشاه نخستین یعنی اردشیر دوم را اعیان خلع کردند و آن دو نفر دیگر هم به مرگی ناگهانی وفات یافتند.
